Surgical Assistants - what is their role?

The role of a Surgical Assistant is to work closely with your Surgeon as a skilled second pair of hands before, during and after surgery, to optimise safety and efficiency.

In order for you to have informed financial consent about the costs of the assisting doctor the following information applies:

Generally the fee for the assisting doctor will be 20% of the surgeon’s  fee. However, each Surgical Assistant is an independent contractor and variations of fees may occur.

It is not always possible to predict exactly what the fees for an operation will be as the procedure may be less or more complicated than initially expected.

In some instances such as emergencies and short notice operation, it is not always possible to predict or meet your assisting doctor as you may already be anaesthetised.

Generally there will be a minimum fee for operations conducted during normal hospital hours. All operations commencing after hours (10pm to 7am weekdays and all public holidays) will attract additions fees.
